IM Volleyball League

Volleyball-specific Rules

  1. Rosters and Teams:
    • Rosters are limited to 12 players.
    • A team consists of 6 players, with a minimum of 4 required to start a game.
  2. Match Format:

    • Matches are played as best two out of three games.
    • The first two games are rally scoring to 25 points, and the tiebreaker game is to 15 points.
  3. Timeouts:

    • Each team is allowed one 30-second timeout per set.
  4. Gameplay Rules:

    • The play follows USVBA rules with intramural-specific amendments.
    • The server may serve from anywhere along the end line using underhand, overhand, jump serve, or sidearm techniques.
    • Double contact on serve receive, or first dig is considered one play and is legal.
    • Simultaneous contact by two players is one play, and either player may make the next contact.
    • Blocking or offensive hitting of a serve is not allowed.
  5. Player Positions and Movement:

    • After service, players may interchange positions but must return to their original positions when the ball is dead.
    • Back-row players may not jump and attack the ball in front of the 10-foot line; their follow-through may cross the line.
  6. Net and Line Rules:

    • Touching the net or its cable while the ball is in play is prohibited.
    • A player may touch the center line with their foot but cannot cross it completely.
    • Lines are considered in play.
  7. Ceiling and Boundaries:

    • If the offensive team hits the ball into the ceiling and it lands on their side, it remains in play and must be returned over the net within three contacts.
    • If the ball lands on the opponent's side after hitting the ceiling, it is a fault, and a side-out is awarded.
  8. Violations:

    • Serving out of order.
    • Serving the ball out of bounds, into the net, or failing to get it over the net.
    • Touching the net or breaking the plane of the net before the ball reaches that area.
    • Contacting the ball more than three times before sending it over the net.
    • Lifting or carrying the ball.
    • Crossing the center line or stepping on the service line before contacting the ball.
  9. Blocks and Attacks:

    • A block of an attack does not count as one of the three team contacts.
    • After a deflected attack, three additional contacts are allowed.
    • Attacks may be made with an open hand, closed fist, or closed cupped hand.

The UAA IM Volleyball League also abides by all general Rules for Intramural and Club Sports.
